THE ACCIDENTAL TOURIST by Anne Tyler

PBD: Post-Book Depression: That feeling you get when you finish a good book that you didn't want to end.

This happens to me all the time. I can't wait to get to the end of a great book to see what happens, but when it's over, I sink into a depression and don't know what to do with myself. FOR DAYS. I search and search for another book to take its place, but it's never the same. I start with other books by the same author. I use Amazon's feature of 'Customers who bought this item also bought...' and 'You might also like...' This is helpful, but it isn't easy to find the same magic. You have to settle for new magic, which is fine of course, but it usually takes time to find that next book and get comfortable with it.

My previous blog post was about one of my all-time favorite books, White Palace. I want to put this out there for other readers who love that book as much as I do:

If you like White Palace by Glenn Savan, you'll love The Accidental Tourist by Anne Tyler.

After a devastating loss, a man who is falling apart is led by fate to an unlikely woman who unexpectedly and profoundly changes his life.

"I'm beginning to think that it's not just how much you love someone. Maybe what matters is who you are when you're with them." - Macon Leary, Accidental Tourist.

The characters in both books - Max and Nora and Macon and Muriel - are flawed and real human beings who are brought together by fate and each find healing through each other.

The Accidental Tourist was made into a beautiful movie starring William Hurt as Macon Leary (I couldn't imagine a better fit) and Geena Davis as Muriel Pritchett. Also starring Bill Pullman as Macon's boss Julian, and Kathleen Turner as Macon's wife.

I've read The Accidental Tourist several times over the years, and recently enjoyed the audio-book that was beautifully narrated by Joe Barrett (in fact I loved his narration so much that I'm checking out his other work).

If you like White Palace and haven't yet read The Accidental Tourist (or vice versa), please do! I would love to hear your thoughts.
